What is Collins Mix and how to substitute

I was originally going to put Collins on my gun, but we don't get much call for it so I opt'ed to buy it in individual bottles from the local grocery. This hasn't been a problem but last week I inadvertently ran out. When that happened everyone in the bar who had ever worked in the business seemed to have their own substitute for collins mix.

What exactly is collins mix and what is the best substitute of its not available??

    Rootsreality...

We use our sour mix... Franco's LEMON to be exact.

If you come into our bar and ask for a Tom Collins this is what you get...

"Would you like Vodka or Gin?" (Because most people want Vodka - they don't know that a REAL Tom Collins is made with Gin.

    And then they get...

Either Vodka or Gin (House - unless they specify)
    Sour Mix
    Splash of 7-up or Sprite
    Garnish with a cherry

FYI: A REAL TOM COLLINS IS...

    Gin
    Lemon Juice
    Simple Syrup
    Club Soda
Garnish with a cherry or orange (or both)

Lol...for 99.9 percent of us collins mix is simply sour mix. In a pinch you can use lemonade.

well, no one hardly uses lemonade...i will tell ya

i remember as a kid in growing up in my aunts bar, when i was around 8 or so, i was hanging out before patrons came in as usual, and I found the "lemon sour" mix

Now I knew better than to mess with alcohol, but this LOOKED like lemonade to me

    So I poured a glass

you can imagine....i realized real quick...that wasn't no lemonade!
